Niagara: Cataract city

Niagara falls has been one of the top tourist attraction in Canada for locals and travellers around the world, and in last summer I was able to checkoff this wonder from my to-visit-in-Canada list. Niagara falls is actually composed of 3 water falls, the most famous and largest one is Canadian falls called Horseshoe fall, second largest is the American fall and smallest one is the Bridal veil falls. The first eye-witness description of Niagara Falls was written by Father Louis Hennepin, a Roman Catholic priest from the Spanish Netherlands, was the first white man to visit the Falls of Niagara in the winter of 1678-1679.

" A Picturesque views of the horseshoe falls along the walkway."

A fact I bet many of us didn't know about Niagara is that it has been a honeymoon destination longer than Canada has been a country. In 1801, when Theodosia ( daughter of U.S. Vice President Aaron Burr ) married Joseph Alston, the couple decided to embark on a “wedding journey” to Niagara Falls. These high-profile visits were the start of a trend and more and more couples began visiting Niagara Falls for their honeymoon.

My journey of Niagara started off with an amazing view of "American Falls" which is comparatively a small waterfall that lies far left of the Horseshoe Falls in the US State.

Height of the American is 180ft, ten feet taller than Horseshoe falls but just 10% of the Niagara's total water flow.

Even before seeing the horseshoe falls you can hear the roaring water and see the misty fog from miles away, and the moment you see the Niagara river roaring towards 170 feet water falls at 41 miles an hour speed causing a feeling of great surprise or wonder .

I then saw a boat heading towards the fall , It is amazing how close you can get to the water. I just kept my eyes wide open because I was in for a experience of lifetime! I couldn't resist getting as closer as possible so, I booked a trip on the Hornblower ( Cruise company on the Canadian side) and picked my red poncho because if you are not covered up you are going to be absolutely drenched (It didn't really help though :P) . What a fun experience! It takes you so close to Horseshoe Falls The closer you get you start feeling the real intensity of the falls.

After the end of amazing boat tour that lasted for about 20 mins, I heard an announcement about fireworks and illumination display that happens throughout the summer. (You can check the schedule here). So, i decided to stay back to catch the fireworks show.

I thoroughly enjoy the breathtaking Niagara Falls Illumination light show. As well as a fireworks display above Niagara Falls with vibrant lights dancing across the sky made it eye candy.

Overall, I had a fantastic time. I loved everything about Niagara and vowed to never hesitate to come back to experience it again and again. Truly, it was enriching experience. If you are planning to visit Niagara, please click here to know how you can get there from Toronto and Things to do.
